Physics

As long as I lived in the US, the physics I studied was very basic. I was properly introduced to the subject only when I joined BVM (in the 8th standard). In the 9th and 10th standard, I developed quite a strong liking for the subject, and this is partially the reason that I chose to take science group in my 11th and 12th standard.

Now that I am in the 12th standard, and have undergone almost 2 years of (somewhat) in depth study of physics, I am rather confused at the approach to the subject. The whole point seems to be to derive some sort of relation between anything and everything (especially in topics pertaining to electricity, magnetism etc). Thats all we do in physics - somehow derive an expression or equation of some sort between 2 or more seemingly unrelated factors.

But is that the objective of the subject? To relate things? Every day, we are taught the values of different 'constants of proportionality'. I for one really have no idea what we are expected to do with this knowledge, other than use it to solve a large number of 'numericals' for the board exam. It seems very vague to me. Is that what physicists do? Derive loads of expressions so that more numericals can be solved? Discover several constants of proportionality, using which more and more expressions can be derived? What is it that they are trying to do? I have been studying physics (or some mutilated form of it) for over 4 years now, and all I am left with is a bunch of expressions.

I understand the importance of physics in out lives. I understand that what we are studying is what enables us to enjoy all the facilities that we do. What I don't understand is what we are supposed to gain and how we are supposed to apply what we learn. What do we do with the expressions that we are deriving? Where and how do we use them?

*Exams starting on the 19th. Blech*

This post is better than a load of trash, I agree. However, trash can be thrown away, which works as an advantage over this post, which on the other hand, cannot be thrown away by anyone except the jobless creator her/himself.

I agree... school physics is a bunch of swear words I won't say.
Add TPS to it, and you have got the least inviting subject ever. This isn't physics. This is... aaargh!

Koze

aiyyo...yes dhruva, i figured kaka kaka was you. and the first anon is also probably you...right?
what im saying is that i do give quite a bit more than a pee if e = mc2(how do you get a superscript in this thing??). i just dont understand what we're supposed to do now, knowing that e = mc2.

I think the objective of learning all these subjects is:

1. Helps enhance your learning capabilities...which in itself is a very important faculty which is important.
2. Gives good glimpse of various subjects that help you to choose one of these for your later studies and in life.
3. I also think knowing some of these principles might help us better understand the world around us. It is of course debatable how much we should learn of each subject.

Did I say anything relevant to your post or did I miss your point?

half and half =)

i understand the point of learning the subjects as such. i just think that the way the subjects are being taught completely defeats the purpose of them being taught.

*Sigh* School physics...chuck it young lady and get a copy of Physics by Resnick and Halliday if you really wish to know what is the use of reading Physics.

Considering that you do not land as scientist at NASA or ISRO, or become a physicst(which I think u will not as per your blog)...
the loads of physics equation can be used only to teach your children...
I think the only thing that we hear more and has more application in a normal life is Newton's Third law "Every action has a equal and opposite reation" and better not to forget that...

sorry ma'am

But i love physics..... i think a lot of about how u see the subject depends on how your teacher manages to teach you... (?)

High school physics is actually very very interesting and forms the basis of college physics and chemistry...

....just deriving relationships has no meaning..there's a reason why each step leads to another, and why one even does it... either to make things simpler to learn and remember or 'cuz ur teacher's asking you to do 'em.... there's no point jst putting side headings and writing a load of mathematical sentences...

the reason why ur taught to derive relations between magnetism and electricity n othr stuff is 'cuz one exists 'cuz of the other.... both put together are needed as a source of EM waves... which are the basis of communication...

....hey! when ur talking abt the "importance" of learning phy other than "understanding"... i can quesstion why im beign taught plumbing and soldering and carpentary in college...?!!!

Experience is what teaches us about LIFE.... every other subject is about LEARNING, UNDERSTANDING, marvelling in the beauty of realting unrelated topics..!

...aah there's that yawn... my sign to shut up and leave...!

Adios...!

I think physics contains a whole lot of nonsense that I've never wanted to get into. Sadly, you science students have chopsen that path...........
